Dr. Peter Haaland

Dr. Haaland was appointed to DARPA in February 2007 following fourteen years as a freelance scientist. Although formally trained in chemical physics Peter's interests transect traditional disciplinary boundaries. His most recent work includes development of an ozone compatible fire suppression technology, now deployed on the Eclipse 500 very light jet aircraft, and new methods for the design of antireflection coatings for spectacle lenses, now used by Essilor. He has also explored heat transfer during cardiac ablation, adhesion resistant vascular stents, infrared stroke therapy, laser eye protection, macular degeneration, detonation nanodiamond, semiconductor spin-coating, solar blind optical filters, gradient-index optical filters, plasma chemistry and ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry.

Prior to his freelance engagements, Peter served as an Air Force officer for ten years, completing his tour as Associate Professor of Physics at the Air Force Institute of Technology. He's authored many technical papers and patents; all but one of the patents has been successfully licensed.

Dr. Haaland received his A.B., A.M., and Ph.D. degrees in Chemistry all from Harvard.
