Timothy (Tim) J. Gibson, Ph.D.

Dr. Gibson joined DARPA in December 2005 as a Program Manager in the Strategic Technology Office. Dr. Gibson's main interests lie in the areas of computer architecture and computer networks. His current networking programs focus on improving network performance, new transport and routing protocols, network security, and efficiently distributing content to deployed units.

Dr. Gibson was a DARPA Program Manager as a U.S. Army Colonel from 2003-2005. He retired from the Army after twenty-six years of service in August 2005.

During his Army career, Dr. Gibson spent six years as an Infantry officer and twenty as a Computer Systems Engineer. He spent nearly ten years in computing assignments with Joint and Combined units in Korea, Hawaii, and Virginia. His Army assignments include establishing and running the Army's first TCP/IP based wartime data network during Operations DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM and teaching Computer Science at the U.S. Military Academy.

Dr. Gibson earned his Bachelor's degree from the Military Academy and completed both a M.S. in Computer Science and a M.A. in History from the University of Kansas in 1989. He completed his Doctorate in Computer Science from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in 1998. His research at Maryland focused on computer systems (architecture, operating systems, networks, and storage systems). He has published in IEEE Spectrum, Networks, Communications, and others.
