Stimulated Hyper-Accelerated Radionuclide Kinetics (SHARK)
Program Manager: Dr. Brian Pierce
Stimulated Hyper-Accelerated Radionuclide Kinetics (SHARK) addresses the problem of rapidly returning military facilities to safe use following a radiological dispersal device (RDD) event. Chemical bonds form between radionuclide contaminant molecules and building surface materials, resulting in difficulty in decontaminating these surfaces to acceptable levels. Upon laser illumination (or other energy transfer), the chemical bonds between the radionuclide molecule and the building materials break and redistribute to the surface. This accelerated-decontamination technique is being developed by the SHARK Program performers.
