Dr. Robert Mandelbaum

Program Manager

Bio:

Dr. Mandelbaum's current focus is on robotics and autonomous systems.

Prior to joining DARPA Dr. Mandelbaum was the Director of the Automotive Business Unit for Sarnoff Corporation where he led research and development of automotive safety products. This included active safety systems for cars that fuse radar and vision sensors to predict impending collisions with very high reliability, enabling triggering of airbags before impact. As Founder of Sarnoff's Robot and Automotive Vision Group he developed and applied perception technologies to the Unmanned Ground Vehicle community, the Manned Ground Vehicle community, and the commercial automotive industry. As a Program Manager in Sarnoff's Vision Technologies Laboratory he led the development of technologies to enable the next generation off-road autonomous mobility vehicles; mobility and surveillance vision modules for an outdoor autonomous robotic sentry; real-time image processing and enhanced visualization for tank commanders and gunners; and real-time image-processing algorithms to actively locate the eye of a bank ATM user in order to obtain a high-resolution image of the iris.

Dr. Mandelbaum has a Ph.D. in Computer and Information Science from the University of Pennsylvania. He has been an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Computer and Information Sciences Department of the University of Pennsylvania since 2000, where he has offered a graduate level course on "Computer Vision for Robotic Platforms". Dr. Mandelbaum has published numerous technical papers in the areas of robotics, vision, and perception. He is co-inventor on two patents and another four patent applications.
