Mr. David Gunning

Program Manager

Bio:

Mr. Gunning manages the Personalized Assistant that Learns (PAL) program, which is developing new technology in artificial intelligence, machine learning, knowledge representation and reasoning, machine perception, natural language processing, and human-computer interaction. Through the PAL program, researchers are developing software that functions as an "enduring personalized cognitive assistant" to help decision-makers manage complex tasks and unexpected events.

Mr. Gunning was at DARPA for a previous tour from 1994-2000 when he managed a series of projects in knowledge-based reasoning, agent-based systems, machine learning, information integration, human-computer interaction, and language understanding, including the creation of DARPA's Command Post of the Future (CPOF) program in 1998.

Mr. Gunning has over 30 years of experience in the research and development of advanced information systems. In between his two tours at DARPA, he was a founding Vice President of SET Associates in Arlington VA, and Vice President for Technology Development at Cycorp, Inc. in Austin, TX. Prior to his DARPA tours, Mr. Gunning was a researcher and program manager in the Air Force Research Laboratories where he led the development of the Air Force's Integrated Maintenance Information System (IMIS) from initial concept definition in the 1980s through technology demonstration and implementation on the F-22 in the 1990s.

Mr. Gunning holds an M.S. in Computer Science from Stanford University, an M.S. in Experimental Psychology from the University of Dayton, and a B.A. in Psychology from Otterbein College.
