Dr. Joshua Alspector
Program Manager
Bio:
Dr. Alspector's research interests include machine learning, distributed information systems, cognitive and intelligent systems, content understanding, and personalization.
Dr. Alspector joined DARPA in 2008. Prior to joining DARPA he spent much of his career at Bell Labs and Bellcore (now Telcordia) where he invented the world's first neural network learning microchip and managed a research team. He then held an endowed professorship in ECE at University of Colorado - Colorado Springs where he founded Personalogy, a company which used machine learning techniques to personalize content and target advertising. The core technology was also used to filter spam e-mails which led AOL to acquire the company. The very successful adaptive anti-spam filters in the AOL e-mail service use this technology. Dr. Alspector was instrumental in setting up AOL Labs by specifying areas in which to do R&D and hiring PhD-level scientists in India and China. As Chief Scientist of AOL Labs he led a research team that created technology to personalize content on the AOL service, target advertising, and perform semantic analysis for eliciting user interests and finding related content.
Dr. Alspector holds Ph.D. (1971) and B.S. (1967) degrees in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, respectively.
