Naval Advanced Amorphous Coatings

Program Manager: Dr. Leo Christodoulou

The Naval Advanced Amorphous Coatings Program is developing a derivative class of high-performance amorphous metal coatings that provide a combination of outstanding corrosion resistance, damage tolerance, and non-skid performance in difficult marine environments. The program objective is to have these coatings certified for unrestricted use on Naval ships. Specifically, the program will optimize mechanical (e.g., damage tolerance) and physical (e.g., friction, roughness) properties of coatings developed under the High-Performance, Corrosion-Resistant Materials (HPCRM) Program for application on a Navy transition (testbed) vehicle, the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS). Thermal-sprayed HPCRM coatings will be applied to selected LCS surfaces, and fleet-operational tests will be conducted.
