Self Decontaminating Surfaces

Program Manager: Dr. Todd Hylton

Self Decontaminating Surfaces LogoThe Self Decontaminating Surfaces Program is exploring creative material technologies to develop a coating system that is biocidal at the surface and exhibits self-cleaning/renewal behavior. To be useful in the military environment, these coatings not only have to kill bacteria, but they also must be able to germinate dormant spores in dry air.  Equally important, the morphology of surface must be controlled in a manner similar to the lotus leaf, so that the surface is self-cleaning.  Progress in the first phase had led to the development of three promising approaches, which are currently being developed for a range of applications, including coatings over chemical agent resistant coatings (CARC) and plasma deposited coatings for creating self-decontaminating surfaces on electronics.
