50TH ANNIVERSARY

Explore below to watch videos of DARPA's 50 years, read articles from DARPA's 50th anniversary book, and view exhibit panels outlining DARPA's work in key areas. Over the years, DARPA has responded to issues of national importance with new ideas and technology that have changed the ways wars are fought and changed the way we live. DARPA was founded in 1958 and celebrated 50 years of technical achievement in 2008.

  • The Formative Years: 1958-1975

Established to maintain U.S. technological superiority over potential adversaries, ARPA is created in 1958 as a division of the Department of Defense.

  • The Cold War Era: 1975-1989

Stealth technology, the first ARPANET wireless transmission, and STARWARS were developed largely in response to the Soviet threat.

  • The Post Soviet Years: 1989-Present

With the fall of the Iron Curtain, international instability sparks developments in robot vehicles, bio-warfare defense and computer simulated training.

In April 2008, DARPA published a book DARPA: 50 Years of Bridging the Gap, in commemoration of the Agency’s 50th anniversary. To obtain a copy of the book, send an email to jan.walker@darpa.mil, or view the electronic version of the book’s articles below.

On the occasion of DARPA’s 50th Anniversary celebration, DARPA created an exhibit that chronicled DARPA technical achievements in key areas. View the exhibit panels below.
